  2. Here's what is known about Ornette Coleman's first recorded orchestral symphonic work (he had written others previously and had them performed but never put on tape): After hiring conductor David Measham and the London Symphony Orchestra, British musicians' union rules prohibited Coleman from using his own quartet to play on the record. 5. Ornette's inn-tee-leck-shual opus. Actually, an excellent symphony with dramatic impact both inside the music and out. The London Symphony Orchestra playing Coleman's /5(22).
  6. Ornette Coleman's Skies of America has always excited me because it refuses to fit easily into any genre descriptor. Though it features the London Symphony Orchestra as Coleman's "backing band," Coleman's composition is too static and harmonically rigid to be considered "classical music." The inclusion of a jazz drummer and Coleman's periodic soloing throughout the piece also contradict that /5(22).
